The horses at Peaceful Acres are rescued or adopted into the sanctuary and equine assisted learning and psychotherapy program for several different reasons. Some of our horses, like Hope, were rescued through collaboration with the SPCA during an animal cruelty case. Hope was emaciated and near death and her 6 month old foal had died of starvation prior to the SPCA intervention. Hope is in sanctuary – her forever home at Peaceful Acres along with two other horses from the same cruelty case.
Peaceful Acres works in collaboration with other not-for profit equine rescue organizations to provide re-homing and placement for horses who are also at risk of being slaughtered. Winston, CC and Pearl are a few horses who found sanctuary at Peaceful Acres after being sold to the “killer buyer” at Camelot in NJ. All three horses are being rehabilitated and evaluated to become partners in the equine assisted learning programs at Peaceful Acres.
Some of the stars of the farm are Off Track Thoroughbreds, like Summer Girl and Snowie who were rescued off the Finger Lakes Race Track – they were at risk until The Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program and Peaceful Acres found them sanctuary at the farm. They are both waiting for sponsors and/or new adoptive homes.
Other horses at Peaceful Acres have been placed by owners who could no longer care for them, but did not want to see them in an auction or at risk of being slaughtered. Horses like Tonka, who is now 36 years old, enjoys his retirement days out in the pasture with Sassy a 38 year old pony rescued from the Unadilla auction in NY. Both Tonka and Sassy are also looking for sponsors, but are not available for adoption due to age and needed care.
Back in 2005 Peaceful Acres fostered 6 PMU foals from Canada, 4 of the horses were adopted to new forever homes, but Pokka and Whinny remain on the farm as equine assisted therapy horses, who work with at – risk youth and people who suffer from grief and loss.
All in all the farm is home to 28-32 equine residents at any one time, including donkeys who were in a breeding barn and are now no longer reproducing! The horses and donkeys at the farm make life changing transitions possible for our human clients who come to heal and become strong. It is through the process of helping to care for the rescued horses, that the people find a better quality in life and are able to surpass life’s obstacles and hurtles that have caused distress and pain.
Rescued and secured a quality rehabilitative sanctuary, Precious and Destiny arrive at PAH suffering from lameness, emaciation, lung disease and fear. A prolonged life of consistent lack of care has resulted in these two beautiful adult horses being in need of special veterinary care, medications, supplements and farrier care.
Precious, a palomino mare, has suffered from several bouts of founder, simply put; the coffin bone is close to rotating through the sole of her hoof due to improper feed, care, and lack of farrier trimming. This beautiful spirit is also fearful and needs a Buddy Sponsor to help her recover physically and emotionally. Thanks to a wonderful team of caregivers, Precious is recovering! PAH arrived just in time, this beautiful mare was literally dying of pain and lack of care. (She was surrendered to PAH by the owner) Buddy Needed ~ your charitable contribution of $450 a month will support her full care and your time will help her to know that people can be loving!
Destiny, a Chestnut QH mare, was rescued from a dark stall where she was fading fast due emaciation and a lung disease caused by improper care and lack of quality feed. She was surrendered to PAH by her owner. Destiny received immediate medical attention and medication so she could breathe and also proper quality feed to nourish her emaciated body. Now recovering slowly at PAH, Destiny needs a Buddy Sponsor who will help in her care, light exercise and help her to heal emotionally and physically. Buddy Needed ~ your charitable contribution of $450 a month will support her full care and your time will help her to know that people can be loving!

The horses at Peaceful Acres Horses Inc, are provided the best in feed and care, the reality of this is that the costs are increasing and the giving has decreased due to a declining economy.
Peaceful Acres feeds quality Nutrena Products and locally grown hay for forage. Providing the best in feed and care is expensive – here is a look at the average feed and care costs that Peaceful Acres has.
Approximately 100 bags of Nutrena Safe Choice is feed per month totaling 5000 pounds of grain! A costs of $1,350.00 per month! Nutrena graciously helps Peaceful Acres by providing 500 pounds of grain free of charge each month – thanks Nutrena! Nutrena also offers Club Support where Peaceful Acres is able to collect UPC Tags off bags of grain ours and other farms – these are then redeemed for cash or credit with Nutrena. If you own a horse, you can save your UPC Tags and send them to Peaceful Acres where our horses will receive a benefit!
Hay – our horses are provided hay as “free choice”. In other words – our horses are fed 2 times a day – but also have hay throughout the day to assist with proper digestion and maintenance of weight. We feed quality forage – our hay bales weigh about 80-90 pounds. The farm uses about 15 bales a day … 450 bales a month! About 5,400 bales a year are consumed by the horses in sanctuary here at Peaceful Acres!
Average Annual Costs:
Grain Costs: $18,000.00 per year
Hay Costs: $17,000.00 per year
Veterinary Costs: $300.00 per horse - $9000.00 per year
(immunizations only – non-emergency care)
Farrier Care: $15,000.00 per year
Shavings/Bedding: $12,000.00 per year
Please consider helping us to continue to provide the best in care to the Peaceful Acres EAL Horses by becoming a monthly donor or sponsor. All contributions are tax deductible and very much appreciated.
For $50.00 a month (about $1.67 a day) you can sponsor the feeding of one of our horses used to help at risk youth, victims of domestic violence and other beneficiaries of our many community programs at Peaceful Acres.
