Mules: Jill, JC, and Ringo

Mules in the slaughter pipeline is a very common place and although there may not be as many mules as there are horses, they too are at risk of neglect, abandonment, livestock auctions and the slaughter pipeline. The issue with mules is often they are completely misunderstood, mistreated and not given the proper care and upbringing necessary for training and handling. My lessons with mules have been abundant and I learn from them daily, they teach me a lot about myself and my ability to be authentic, and a good caregiver to them. Jill, Ringo and JC all were saved from the slaughter pipeline, they all held similar characteristics of not trusting people  – perhaps rightfully so. Upon entering Peaceful Acres Horses sanctuary these mules were terrified of us, this also meant they could be dangerous or a flight risk. Over time and consistency they have learned to accept us and to not fear us, it has been a daily objective for our team to be good leaders, consistent and earn their trust. I would be lying if I said treats were not part of our Earn Their Trust Goal and those little carrots and pieces of apple sure have helped in the process. JC, Ringo and Jill may perhaps live with us here at PAH for their lifetimes, because it is not easy to find a Forever Guardian ready, willing and able to take on the scars that these mules still hold with them, but time will tell. As for now, they are safe, loved and actually like to interact with us now – let’s just call it compassionate progress that’s working. They really are sweet, smart and certainly have become best friends here at Peaceful Acres Horses.

 Update: Jill has passed.
