The costs are high for sustaining a life-saving, and life-changing non-profit rescue sanctuary organization. The cost of not sustaining it are even higher. When active rescue is taking place, there is an excitement and heroic journey that we all love to hear and be a part of. While this is a valued part of being a rescue organization, the work doesn’t end there. Here are PAH, our mission is to keep our promises to those who have been saved, and given a second chance at a life filled with respect, care and often a new and meaningful purpose. We hope you will be a part of this much-needed and valuable mission. If you have questions and are not finding an answer on our website, please call the office or email us.

Reviews of Peaceful Acres Horses from www.GreatNonProfits.org:

“When I started volunteering at Peaceful Acres several years ago, I was so impressed with the accomplishments of Nanci and her team of caregivers. They work hard to find the resources to rescue and care for horses, minis, donkeys, and mules, giving them a second chance after being abandoned, often in the slaughter pipeline. Nanci and her caregivers offer love, compassion, and a forever home for America’s forgotten equines. In addition, the rehabilitation work she has done to re-home equines eligible for adoption placement is nothing short of a miracle. Nanci’s work is inspiring, and it’s uplifting to know that such a beautiful piece of land in upstate New York is being utilized for this worthy endeavor.” -A

“I am so proud to be associated as a volunteer caregiver with this rescue sanctuary for horses, donkeys and mules. In addition to providing training and support for her valued volunteers, Executive Director Nanci Beyerl has devoted her life, heart, intelligence, education and resources toward providing a permanent, safe and healthy home for these majestic animals to live out their natural life span. These otherwise slaughter-bound equines would have had no chance of surviving because of thoughtless overbreeding, our society’s “throw-away” mentality and a general failure to plan for the animals’ retirement. Nanci uses her business acumen, her contacts in the rescue community and her partnership with outstanding veterinarians and equine specialists to assure stability and health for her equine residents. With her background in social work, she has developed several programs that give people of all ages and health needs a chance to interact with (the) animals in a beautiful environment. It is a true honor to be part of this humane work in progress. I invite you to join this worthwhile organization.”

Equine Rescue Stories - Current Residents - In Need of Sponsors

On the Meet the Rescues page (found on the main menu above) you will find a blog-style section with many stories including Current PAH Residents Awaiting Sponsors, Adopted, Dearly Departed and Individuals that have been chosen by a Sponsor. Please, get to know the equines!

(below are just a few of the Peaceful Acres Horses’ resident rescues stories – please, see the Meet the Rescues page for more of their stories)

Gabby

There she was afraid, and not knowing where she was or what was going to happen to her next. She was just one horse in a crowded pen with about 30 other fearful horses. She was in a “waiting pen”, a place that Peaceful Acres Horses would go to frequently to save horses (equines) before they were going to be tagged to ship for slaughter.

Advocates and Rescuers call it “the slaughter pipeline”. The slaughter pipeline is a hopeless time in a horse’s life when they leave a familiar place and fall into the control of dealers, auction barns and ultimately owned by a kill buyer who will ship the horse(s) to Canada or Mexico to be slaughtered for human consumption.

If you follow Peaceful Acres Horses on our social media pages, you have heard the stories, you have been on this lifesaving journey with us since 2007. Maybe you have donated to save a horse, mini, mule or donkey. Thank you – you are truly a lifesaver!

What you may not know is their individual stories, because once they are saved and safe at Peaceful Acres Horses, the emergency is over, and somehow their stories are not as enticing. They are ok, so everything must be ok.

But everything is not okay, nothing is easy, and without love, care, feed, and the dedication of kind, generous people, PAH can’t keep our promises to horses like Gabby. Maybe you are one of those people today who will offer some much-needed and appreciated financial support to Gabby.

Gabby followed me (Nanci) around the “waiting pen” that day, moving around and out of the way of other horses who were trying to get my attention. I believe the horses know what is next, they are willing to do almost anything to be recognized and saved. Gabby was persistent in her pursuit of me. She moved much larger horses away from me so she could rest her head on my shoulder. She captured me and my heart. She claimed me as her lifesaver that day by being sure that she was seen and heard. The little mare with a strong, diligent, and lovely heart.

Gabby chose me that day before she shipped to slaughter, she chose to be saved, to give it her all to be seen and heard. The message she now gives to people at Peaceful Acres Horses as she helps them to find their voice, their hope, and their life made bright, hopeful, and new. Gabby was saved from slaughter and now helps people feel comforted through their hurdles and emotional pain.

Gabby needs and deserves a sponsor – Will you choose Gabby as your rescued horse to Sponsor?

Thank you for your generosity and compassion!

~ Nanci & Team PAH

Rascal

Rascal was saved from the slaughter pipeline as a very young jack/colt. He was sick with pneumonia, emaciated, and very weak. At the time we met Rascal, and his brother Spanky, they were lying on the cold ground and struggling to breathe.

We knew we had to save these two precious young donkey boys! We also knew that their prognosis would be poor and saving their lives from the illnesses they had would take round-the-clock care, medications, and a miracle.

After several days and nights in the stable, Rascal began to breathe better. His strength was returning and his appetite was improving. Both Rascal and Spanky healed together at Peaceful Acres Horses and they haven’t spent a single day apart. They are silly, and spunky and always bring joy to the people they meet.

Rascal and Spanky are our miracle donkeys!

For as little as $42 per month, you can become a Feed Partner for Rascal. Your funding support will directly purchase hay and grain for Rascal’s daily care.

Please use our easy and secure giving links, or buttons to become a supporter, partner, or sign-up for the Horsin’Around Buddy program.

Flicka

Flicka was saved from a terrible case of animal cruelty where several horses had died from, injuries, starvation, and lack of veterinary care.

When the police and Peaceful Acres Horses arrived that cold fall day there were a few mature horses and several youngsters who were in immediate need.

There was no barn, no electricity, no running water, no care whatsoever. They lived in what people called “the junkyard”.

Flicka was one of the mature horses who was terrified of people. She was running around the area and trying to get as far away from us as possible. We were fortunate to have the help of a few very seasoned horse people who remained calm and safe to Flicka.

After several attempts to convince Flicka to get into our trailer, she did. Everyone, including the State Police Troopers, was happy and let out a celebratory cheer.

Flicka came to Peaceful Acres Horses where our veterinarian evaluated her and gave us a clear refeeding schedule. She had been eating garbage and we knew the risk of an impaction colic was highly possible.

Over weeks of care by our volunteers, Flicka began to gain needed weight and started to trust her caregivers. It was beautiful to watch such a frightened and sad horse begin to show signs of peace and trust.

Two months after saving Flicka we had her tested to see if she was in-foal. Sure enough, Flicka was pregnant and our care routine changed to help her to have a healthy and safe pregnancy.

All was going well until it wasn’t. Her veterinarian was concerned and asked for her to be brought to the veterinary clinic to do further tests and have their staff keep a close eye on her.

We received a call after a couple of days, her veterinarian told us she didn’t think the baby and Flicka were going to make it. Sadness and disappointment settled into our hearts and the stable!

She said, “Pray for a miracle because that’s maybe the only thing that will help”.

We prayed!!

The next morning my phone rang, it was Flicka’s veterinarian. My heart sank…
Then I heard…”Nanci, you’ve gotten your miracles, you have a beautiful appaloosa colt and Flicka is a very good momma. Baby is nursing and momma is doing great “.

Oh my goodness, Everyone was elated!! We did our barn chores and jumped in the truck to head to the clinic. There they were, momma and baby perfectly perfect!! Flicka was calm, and let us visit with her newborn son. It was as if her entire sad story was gone. She was happy, confident, and healthy.

Benny and Flicka still call Peaceful Acres Horses their home safe home. Benny is a very handsome and sweet gelding who loves his horse friends and working within our Equine-guided Emotionally Supportive coaching program. He loves kids!!

Flicka is content, happy, confident, and loves her caregivers and guests. She’s a little timid still, but she certainly is enjoying her peaceful life.

If Flicka’s story has touched your heart, please consider becoming a Feed Partner $42, Care Sponsor $95 ( per month), or Flicka’s Champion Contributor to help support her feed and care needs at Peaceful Acres Horses.

Thank you for your generosity and support.

Together we are Keeping Our Promises to the Rescues at Peaceful Acres Horses!

On behalf of everyone at Peaceful Acres Horses, we are grateful to you for your generosity, dedication and compassion.

Pokka

Pokka was just a young colt when Peaceful Acres Horses saved him and 6 other youngsters from the Premarin industry – Blaze and Whinny are also still with us at PAH. If you are not familiar with that hideous and cruel practice I will tell you a little bit about it and you can do your own research to learn more. The PMU industry uses pregnant mares to extract their urine for use in the pharmaceutical industry, Premarin is a hormone replacement for menopausal women – it also has countless side effects for women, including cancer. PMU Ranchers in America and Canada (other Countries also) hook urine extraction lines to the pregnant mares for the majority of their 11 month gestation period. During this time the mares are not able to lay down, they are in small standing stalls and do not have time off the lines to graze or mingle with other horses, they are imprisoned without compassion. It is a very cruel practice! The foals, like Pokka, Blaze and Whinny are the by-products of that industry. They are often sent to slaughter for human consumption or the young mares once bred are put into the collection lines and they too are used for the PMU industry. Once the mares are no longer productive, not able to carry another foal, or lame and ill from years of being hooked up to the collections lines, they too are sent to slaughter.  Please do your own research and also be very aware and educated before taking Premarin or other brands.

Pokka was in a huge pasture with about 60 other PMU foals when I met him 15 years ago. He and all the other youngsters we not halter broke and saw people as a threat. They had been taken away from their mommas and transported to America from Canada by advocates with the goal to find forever loving new homes for them. Over the course of a several days my daughter, my mom and a few friends and I went to the farm that they were all gathered to try to engage with a few that would be able to come to Peaceful Acres for love, care, training and become available for adoption placement.

Once at the holding farm, I set my eyes on this absolutely adorable paint colt, he was as handsome as they come and had a curiosity about him that I fell in love with. Trying to get near him or the others was a bit of a challenge as they all saw us as a threat and were rightfully so unsure of our motivations. But we stayed constant and compassionate to earn their trust.

On the 4th day it was time to bring our trailer and work with other people who also had their trailers to bring our 6 PMU babies home to PAH! I knew it was my goal to convince Pokka and Whinny (Palomino filly)  to get into our trailer, but it was not going to be easy as they really were very very reluctant. After a bit of time, one by one they followed each other onto the trailers, and Score – Pokka and Whinny were on our trailer! I was so excited, we did it!

Once back at Peaceful Acres farm it was time to turn them into their paddock and stall area, we had made some adjustments to the stable to make turnout and stabling easier and a trainable moment at every transition. Pokka was easy, it did not take him long to understand that we were not going to harm him and we were his source of food, a clean stall, fresh water and compassion. He was so smart, even as a youngster! Pokka became the leader of his little herd, reassuring the others that we were safe and that they too could trust us.

One day in 2006, I was studying for an exam, I was in grad school at the time to earn my MSW, I looked out my window and saw the horses were all lying down, they were napping in the sunshine and all looked so peaceful. I went outside and entered their paddock, they all stayed still, no one bolted, this was such progress! I walked up to Pokka who was quietly resting and began petting his head, he did not get up, I got closer and sat down next to him, he again did not move, I then laid down on top of him, he did not move. At that point Pokka and I had a beautiful shift in our relationship that today remains the same. You know the moment you encounter your heart horse, the one that gets you and will trust you through every moment and encounter. My mom was with me that day and was amazed at the progress that we had made in only a few short weeks. The bond that we then went on to have with Pokka and his herd was purely magical.

Pokka, Whinny and Blaze stayed with us at Peaceful Acres Horses (established as a 501 c 3 in 2007) and they became partners in our Equine Assisted Learning and Therapy programs for youth and adults surpassing grief, loss and trauma. The other youngsters we saved from the PMU industry went on to have wonderful new Forever Guardians.  Today, 15 years later Pokka, Whinny and Blaze still work with people as emotional support equines in our Horse and Donkey Hugs Program and also our Wellness Retreats for women with a cancer diagnosis, veterans and our women’s empowerment programs.

Pokka is still that handsome guy with a heart of gold and compassion that he offers to every person he meets. He is a lead horse to his herd and he is always willing and able to bring a smile to the face of a person who needs him. I am grateful to Pokka for the years of consistent friendship and being a stability partner in our programs at Peaceful Acres Horses.  He is that horse of a lifetime, forever in my heart and always kind, intuitive and full of wisdom.

Blaze

Blaze came to Peaceful Acres Horses as a yearling after being saved from the PMU industry. He was one of the thousands of foals born to a mare that was connected to the urine collection lines for the production of Premarin, a hormone replacement for menopausal women.  This process produces foals that are then either used as mares for the collection lines or they are discarded into the slaughter pipeline for human consumption. Blaze was one of 7 foals who came to PAH as yearlings who thanks to PAH were able to  escape this dreadful – cruel process. Blaze has become known over his 14 years at PAH as an emotional support equine assisting people to surpass grief, loss and trauma. Blaze has worked to bring better days to veterans, seniors, women surpassing a cancer diagnosis and youth. Blaze is a forever resident at Peaceful Acres Horses and continues to shine as an emotionally supportive equine in our programs for people in need.

Zena

Zena was depleted and had lost hope in the “waiting pen”. When Nanci stepped through the gate to the “pen”, Zena slowly walked up to her and put her head in Nanci’s arms. At that moment, she was safe from the brutal death that was awaiting her.

Zena came home to Peaceful Acres Horses to heal, feel loved and thrive. Zena is now an exceptional emotional support horse helping people to surpass their emotional wounds and learn to thrive too.

We will never know why such a beautiful, kind, smart, and well trained horse like Zena became so close to being slaughtered for human consumption! What we do know is Nanci arrived at the exact time Zena needed her to save her life and bring her to her forever home to be loved and offer love to others.

Please consider becoming Zena’s Sponsor
For as little as $42 per month, you can become a Feed Partner to Zena. Your funding support will directly purchase hay and grain for Zena’s daily care.

Jazzy

Jazzy is an absolutely beautiful and lovely mare who was abandoned into the slaughter pipeline in 2015. Jazzy stood there in that cold, muddy, scary place on a dreary December day. She stood off alone, at a distance from the other horses, almost as if she was hiding from what could come, or watching out for someone.

We had gone to the pen to save 2 horses that Peaceful Acres Horses had fundraised for and were prepared to bring home to the sanctuary. But what happened next had us gladly saving four horses that day.

As we started to walk away from the pen with the two horses who we had come to save, we heard a loud nicker from the paint horse in the distance. She appeared stressed and trying desperately to get our attention. We walked back to the pen where we saw another paint horse caught between a fence and a large hay bunk feeder. The horse was knee deep in the mud, she was emaciated, afraid and exhausted from trying to break loose from the fence.

I called to the “owner” of the pen; “Hey …. are these two paint horses saved yet?” He hollard back to me, “No and if you want them, get them now cause they are moving out tomorrow.” “Moving out” meant heading to the semi truck that would transport them to Canada to be slaughtered!

Reaching for credit cards and cash, we had enough money on the three of us to save them. Off to the office I went to pay their “bail”, that’s the life saving money to set them free from the slaughter pipeline.

We named the paint horse who was stuck in the fence Christie and we named the horse who stood off in the distance, the one who nickerd to us to save Christy, All That Jazz.

All That Jazz – “Jazzy” is absolutely beautiful, she is kind and still has a watchful eye out for her horse buddies. She has gained confidence and appreciates her time with people and also her quiet time, alone in the pasture. We were at the pen that day to save two horses, but Jazzy made sure we saved her and her friend Christy too.

Please consider Jazzy

Esther

Esther was saved from the slaughter pipeline while in foal to her son Ezra. Esther was part of a donkey herd reduction that resulted in many donkeys becoming displaced from their donkey family and many had shipped to slaughter.

It was beyond sad to see them suffering physically and emotionally!

By the time we met Esther and her donkey family, they were sick with pneumonia and in poor body condition. The prognosis for Esther was poor, but we had hope and an excellent veterinary team at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY.

After several days of veterinary care and medication for pneumonia, Esther began to show signs that she would survive!! Several months after saving Esther, we knew she was in foal. We were all so excited, soon we would be experiencing the birth of four donkeys! All of jennys we saved that day from slaughter were in foal!

Ezra was the fourth of the babies to be born. He was the tiniest and absolutely adorable! Esther was such a a good momma to Ezra and the two of them found comfort and peace together in their new Stable, Loving Home at Peaceful Acres Horses.

Esther and Ezra are still with their donkey family here at Peaceful Acres Horses. Everyday is a special day here for them, they know that life is safe, full of compassion and dedication from kind and generous volunteers.

Esther and Ezra are our miracle donkeys!

For as little as $42 per month, you can become Feed Partners for Ezra and Esther. Your funding support will directly purchase hay and grain for Ezra and Esther’s daily care.

Wyatt

Wyatt was saved from animal cruelty as a young colt. He was emaciated and was suffering from failure to thrive. His body was not growing properly, his legs were deformed and his prognosis was poor.

Once saved and in the comfort of Peaceful Acres Horses, our volunteer team showered Wyatt with love, compassion, and nutritional support to match his needs and quality veterinary care.

Over a period of about 6 months, we witnessed a miracle! Wyatt gained body condition, he was gaining confidence and his legs were straightening!

Wyatt soon let us know how much he loved children! Every time a young person would enter the stable, Wyatt became animated and drew their attention to him.

He not only became Very Handsome, he also began to positively transform the lives of the people he was meeting!

Wyatt has helped countless people over the years at Peaceful Acres Horses! He is always willing to offer hope and friendship to people who are feeling hopeless and isolated. He’s a Blessing at Peaceful Acres Horses!

But there’s another sad part of the story…
Believe it or not… Wyatt does not have a single sponsor.

Perhaps you will become Wyatt’s Care Sponsor, Feed Partner or Champion Contributor?

For as little as $42 a month, you will directly be helping to support Wyatt’s Care needs at Peaceful Acres Horses.

All contributions are greatly appreciated and helpful and will help PAH to Keep Our Promises to Wyatt.

Pictured - the Gentle Giants - an incredible and dearly missed group of rescued draft horses.

Keeping our promises to care for and love the rescues here until their last days means that we say a lot of “Hellos” as we meet new spectactular people and equines over the many years since the founding of Peaceful Acres Horses, but it also means that we are very familiar with difficult “Goodbyes”. We don’t know how long we will have to share this life with others, so let’s make the most of it, cherish our days and leave a positive impact on those around us. -SL
