Suzie Q was saved from a ‘holding pen’ awaiting transport to slaughter in 2016. The day we met is etched in my mind, there she was, only known by the number 241 on her hip, no name, just a kill pen #. She was standing away from the other horses, she was skinny, dirty, and lost her hope. Her head was low, ears were back as she faced the wall in the cold, dingy barn.

As I approached Suzie Q, her head lifted, and she cautiously looked towards me. As I got closer to her, I knew she was not going to be aggressive in any way, she was terrified and unsure of where she was or why, she was timid and afraid. She had been someone’s horse not long before, but her days or weeks in the slaughter pipeline had defeated her physically and emotionally.

I spoke to her, reassuring her that she was going to be ok. I gently touched her neck; she moved closer to me. She accepted me at that moment, almost as if she was pleading with me to save her, to keep her safe.  That day in 2016 was the beginning of Suzie Q’s new life with us at Peaceful Acres Horses. As the weeks and months went on Suzie not only gained weight and confidence, her ability to console people was beginning to shine.

Suzie Q is one of PAH’s rescues who not only was saved from slaughter, but she has also become one of our very best Equine-guided emotionally supportive horses. Suzie Q absolutely loves sharing time with people and helping them to learn horsemanship skills and also develop improved personal development skills. Through Suzie’s gentleness, kindness, and stability, people are improving their communication skills, self-esteem, problem-solving skills, resiliency, and hope for their lives.

Suzie Q was saved by our team at Peaceful Acres Horses so she could thrive, and now she is helping people to thrive. The statement “a diamond in the rough” could definitely describe Suzie Q, to see her pictures of when PAH saved her and to see her now is nothing short of a miracle.
